What are Simple Present Tense Rules?
The simple present tense is a verb tense used to describe actions that are currently happening, habitual actions, and general truths. The following are some rules for using the simple present tense:
- For third-person singular subjects (he, she, it), add -s or -es to the base form of the verb.
Examples:
- I walk to work every day. (first-person singular)
- You walk to work every day. (second-person singular)
- He walks to work every day. (third-person singular)
- She goes to the gym every morning. (third-person singular)
- It rains a lot in Seattle. (third-person singular)
- For non-third-person singular subjects, use the base form of the verb.
Examples:
- We play tennis every weekend. (first-person plural)
- You play tennis every weekend. (second-person plural)
- They play tennis every weekend. (third-person plural)
- Use the simple present tense to describe habits or repeated actions.
Examples:
- I wake up at 6 am every morning.
- She drinks coffee every afternoon.
- They watch TV every night.
- Use the simple present tense to describe general truths or facts.
Examples:
- The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
- Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius.
- Dogs are loyal animals.
- Use the simple present tense in instructions, directions, or recipes.
Examples:
- Add the sugar to the mixing bowl and stir.
- Take a left at the traffic light and go straight for two miles.
- First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Use the simple present tense to talk about scheduled events in the future.
Examples:
- The concert starts at 8 pm tonight.
- Our flight leaves at 10 am tomorrow.
- The meeting begins at 2 pm next Tuesday.
Remember that the simple present tense does not indicate the time of the action; it only indicates that the action is happening, habitual, or true.
